As a hat owner it s important to know how to clean your hat properly. For stubborn sweat stains apply a little shampoo to the stains and scrub it in with the toothbrush. If the hat is white or a light color use a white cloth.
The suede bar must be moved in a circular pattern. A panama hat may never be cleaned to its true original cleanliness but it can be well cleaned using this method. If the hat is dark use a dark cloth. Fill a small bowl or your kitchen sink with cold water do not ever use warm or hot water as this could cause the color to run. The types of hats best suited for hand washing include baseball caps as long as you are not cleaning older hats with a cardboard bill wool hats and hand knit hats.
If nothing comes off on your cloth you re probably fine to move onto cleaning the rest of the hat. Use a clean toothbrush to spot clean any stains. To remove oily stains and sweat use one part baby shampoo and 15 parts warm water. This method is similar to cleaning shoes and will just require a brush and some laundry detergent. If you do see color it s probably best to avoid cleaning it for risk of damage.
If simple water isn t working to clean your hat you can use hydrogen peroxide as a gentle cleaner. Fill a spray bottle half with hydrogen peroxide and half with water. A suede bar eraser works well to remove stains from light colored leathers. Buff matted suede hats with caked on dirt with emery cloth or a very fine grit sandpaper. Dab a clean cloth in some water.
Clean the whole hat using a hydrogen peroxide solution. Do not over steam or the entire hat can lose its shape. For heavy fabric hats like brocade use a mild detergent mixed with cool water and spot treat stains with a white cloth. To restore hat veils to their original best use steam from an iron clothes steamer or hold over a pot of boiling water to carefully reshape a crushed veil. Spray the solution onto a soft cloth.
