My go to strategy for online collaboration has always been google docs even before the pandemic hit. Users joined using zoom rooms are unable to join breakout rooms but the main room can be used as an alternative session for these users. No matter if you use zoom or google meet or another video product to do breakout rooms with students consider having a google slides per group. It s low tech but it works beautifully.

Open the breakout rooms template for google slide that we created from the button above. Tell students to access the appropriate google folder and document according to their bor once they arrive in the breakout rooms. Post the links in the main class doc. Designate how many groups you want to create. Give the google doc and its corresponding breakout room the same distinctive name.
Set the number of bors and decide if you want to sort students randomly or manually. From the zoom toolbar click share screen. Then right click on the slide thumbnail on the left panel and select copy from the pop up menu. During the class session you can create breakout rooms by clicking the breakout room button on the bottom of your zoom screen. You can choose if you want to manually assign the students to designated.
However i prefer using google docs for student collaboration. Grant your learners access to these docs and grant permission to edit. In this case the student participant would be sharing the google doc for collaborative editing. Your students have the option of sharing their desktop or an individual application window. If the meeting is being cloud recorded it will only record the main room regardless of what room the meeting host is in.
